RICE MILLING GUIDE · September 12, 2026

From cleaning to packing: the rice milling process.

Understand the role of each stage before selecting a complete rice milling line.

A complete rice milling line links several different separation and finishing operations. Understanding their roles makes it easier to discuss equipment and avoid missing a necessary stage.

Cleaning and destoning

Pre-cleaning removes size-based impurities and light material, while a destoner separates stones and other heavy impurities. Actual equipment selection depends on the incoming grain and contamination.

Husking and paddy separation

The husker removes the outer husk. Paddy separation then distinguishes brown rice from unhusked paddy, allowing paddy to return for further husking instead of passing directly to the whitening stage.

Rice milling

Milling removes bran layers from brown rice. Rice variety, moisture, equipment settings and the number of passes influence the result. Machine selection should balance the desired finish with temperature and broken-rice control.

Polishing and grading

Polishing can improve surface appearance and cleanliness. Grading separates fractions such as whole and broken rice according to the selected equipment and settings.

Color sorting

A color sorter can reject discolored grains and certain foreign materials. It complements the earlier cleaning and grading stages; it does not make those stages unnecessary.

Weighing and packing

Packing equipment is selected around the bag format, weight range and required level of automation. Include the packing area when planning the full production flow.

Match the stages

The line should be considered as one process. A fast individual machine does not guarantee the same throughput for the complete plant. Feed stability, transfer equipment and downstream capacity all matter.
